A family home for generations...
Knots...
George Norman Thompson was a Cheif Boatswain's Mate in the US Navy, who served his country in World War II and Korea. His Naval career, along with his family roots in Swan Quarter, made him one of the most accomplished and respected watermen in the area. As part of his job, his skill for knot-tying was a noted requirement - on vessels as large as war ships or as small as a crabbing boat. The art form of knot-tying was his lifelong hobby.
Landing...
After traveling the country with the Navy, Norman was eventually able to semi-retire back to his home of Swan Quarter in the 60s. His house was in the prime location of downtown Swan Quarter, and more importantly, in full view of "The Landing" (Landing Road), which is still a haven for boaters, namely commercial fishermen. Naturally, Norman continued his sailor life in Swan Quarter and earned his living commercially fishing, while serving as a mentor for the fishing community. Whether he was fishing, mending nets or just having a cup of coffee and enjoying the breeze, he could usually be found down to the Landing.
Inn...
Just as the home was a fixture of her childhood, owner Donna Thompson Spencer seeks to make the home a fixture in the community, carrying on her parents' tradition of southern hospitality and pride in local heritage. Extending a warm welcome to all who visit, Donna's business model is built on values her mama taught her - cleanliness, friendliness and honesty.
The Inn opened it's doors to the first guests in September, 2011 for people displaced, as well as out-of-town agencies that responded to Swan Quarter after Hurricane Irene. For a home that's weathered it's share of storms, it was the perfect new beginning for this century-old home ...
...offering a safe haven after the storm.
